The United States and ASEAN
Prashanth Parameswaran
Chapter 15 in The Elgar Companion to ASEAN, 2023, pp 211-221 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter argues that the origin, evolution and prospects of ties between ASEAN and the United States have been shaped by a series of parameters, phases and pillars that have influenced the dynamics of this pivotal relationship. Drawing on a mix of primary and secondary sources, including conversations with policymakers and official documents, it addresses the mix of opportunities and challenges that both sides have grappled with as well as how the dynamics of this consequential relationship have shaped both ASEAN’s development since its outset as well as the overall natural of U.S. engagement in Southeast Asia and Asia more generally. The chapter also delves into structural changes that can affect the future of the relationship, including the ongoing development of new mechanisms to elevate and institutionalise cooperation and the growing recognition of common cross-pillared challenges which require adjustments by both sides.
