Chapter 19 in The Elgar Companion to ASEAN, 2023, pp 265-274 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Southeast Asia is among the most stable and peaceful regions in the world, and this volume discussed ASEAN as a key reason for this. Just like the EU did in Europe, ASEAN has brought about peace, stability and substantial socio-economic growth in a region, where none of these could be taken for granted previously. This concluding chapter identifies, summarises and reflects on a few key themes that the authors have discussed expertly over the course of this volume’s 17 topical chapters. Some of these themes have emerged in many or even all chapters, others in only in one or two. In sum, a unifying element, a thread that ran through all the chapters is that ASEAN appears to be an organisation that is driven as much from within as from without. And the two parts, of this volume, a look from the ‘inside out’ and the ‘outside in’, were selected for that reason precisely.
