Chapter 4 in The Elgar Companion to ASEAN, 2023, pp 49-61 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Over the past half century, the Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has developed from initially a forum for diplomacy and international relations into a more broadly conceived body that seeks to represent the peoples of the region and how it addresses the issues relevant to them. As of 2015, ASEAN represented an ASEAN Community through three distinct pillars: Political-Security, Economic, and Social-Cultural. ASEAN has sought to both construct and lay claim to a Southeast Asian identity. This chapter traces the development of an ASEAN identity from the organisation’s founding in 1967 to the present. The active construction of an ASEAN identity is described in this chapter though ASEAN’s policy statements, practices, and programs. Most recently, this has included the adoption of “The Narrative of ASEAN Identity” in 2020 and lately the development of a “Values-Oriented” Identity concept.
