Life spans - How to determine participation across the life span in the context of sub-Saharan poverty

Bronwyn Sumption

Chapter 17 in Handbook of Sport and International Development, 2023, pp 204-218 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter is based on a doctoral study and will focus on providing insight to a novel conceptual framework, holistic physical participation framework (HPPF), that includes the synthesis of three independent theories integrated into one to use as a theoretical lens to understand the multidimensions and complexity of active participation in impoverished communities. The research did find that individuals from impoverished communities are influenced by various factors that present as a continuum across age-related transitions. Analysing the data from the research study underpinned by the HPPF, allowed for development of a methodological tool (MT) that expresses both inhibitory and contributory factors that are influential to an individuals’ choice to participate in formal physical activity (PA) across the lifespan. The focal point of this MT is that it is a tool that quantifies qualitative data.
