Participatory action research - Innovating research using visual and digital methods in sport for development and peace
Mitchell McSweeney
Chapter 19 in Handbook of Sport and International Development, 2023, pp 231-239 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, a brief overview of the use of a participatory action research (PAR) approach using visual and digital methods is provided, particularly in regard to the methods of photovoice, photocollaging, and digital storytelling. Examples from an empirical study in Kampala, Uganda, with refugees involved in sport-for-development and peace (SDP) program, are provided to illustrate the potential benefits of the use of visual and digital methods. The chapter concludes by discussing how PAR and visual and digital methods in SDP may be beneficial for: (1) deconstructing power relations in research; and (2) enabling innovative and unique knowledge mobilisation strategies.
