Abstract:
This chapter examines the contribution that conflict transformation and peace research can make to reduce levels of violent conflict in order to enable progress towards realising the 17 SDGs. The argument presented is that sport, and particularly football, because of its global reach and the depth of its connection with community and locality, provides a powerful vector to link the objectives of both the development and peace studies fields in pursuit of the SDGs. We illustrate this potential through case studies drawn from a survey of the projects of football clubs in the English Premier League, the J League in Japan, and a single club study of the Foundation of FC Barcelona in Spain. We show that in all of these case studies, football clubs are working to enhance progress towards the SDGs, and that they also have the potential to advance positive peacebuilding in their communities.
