Chapter 29 in Handbook of Sport and International Development, 2023, pp 346-357 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Athletes are increasing utilising their platform to address a broad range of issues in society, with very little signs of slowing down. As they communicate and encourage messages that influence hearts and minds, athlete-led instances heed the call for greater understanding into the athlete’s role as a diplomatic actor. The following discussion probes further to posit that athletes have the potential to act as ‘third culture’ builders whose strength lies in eliciting empathy which can be used to encourage mutually beneficial experiences among peoples.
