Action sports - Global issues for action sports and the case of SkatePal

Anna Farello

Chapter 33 in Handbook of Sport and International Development, 2023, pp 397-407 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Action sports, including skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding, have been growing rapidly in recent decades, especially amongst young people. Skateboarding in particular has seen a tremendous increase in participation and recognition, as seen by its debut in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Such growth comes with challenges, however. In this chapter, a single case study of SkatePal, a UK-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), is used to exemplify specific issues of overseas charitable work. The chapter touches on two key factors: working from afar and scaling up, which are discussed in relation to SkatePal’s efficacy and its long-term aim of creating a self-sustaining skateboarding scene in Palestine. In the future, international organisations will need to consider and internalise the local context of where they are implementing a programme in order to overcome global issues that action sports are facing.
