Chapter 12 in How to Engage Policy Makers with Your Research, 2022, pp 124-135 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The idea of postgraduate researchers engaging in partnerships and collaborations external to the university are not new, although the value of such engagements has become more widely recognised and understood. This chapter explores how the collaboration adds value to the career development of the doctoral researcher in a number of ways, from improving research outcomes, to enhancing engagement, and improving impact outcomes. Further to the benefits to the doctoral researcher, such collaborative PhD research projects and programmes can also bring considerable benefits to collaborating partners. This chapter reflects on the authors' experiences of an interdisciplinary doctoral network established in partnership with a local authority, concluding with key takeaways and lessons learnt.
