Chapter 4 in How to Engage Policy Makers with Your Research, 2022, pp 38-49 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The worlds of policy and academia are frequently described as speaking two different languages. This can create a barrier for the two to work together to achieve shared goals, including the generation of evidence-informed policy. In this chapter we begin by illustrating the distinct 'languages' of the academic and policy communities, presenting examples from both. Drawing on our linguistics backgrounds, we then bring in theories of communication to understand why these two communities talk differently, how this creates a barrier to working together, and what is needed to enable mutual understanding. In the last part of the chapter, we couple knowledge from our time spent in academia with insights gained from working as policy practitioners to suggest techniques that members of both communities could use to 'speak the same language' to enable more effective and impactful dialogue.
