Abstract:
The literature on entrepreneurial ecosystems is often based on assessments of highly successful cases. While this has produced useful insights, it has also generated a sense of isomorphism, which seldomly reflects the entrepreneurial dynamics taking place in a variety of contexts. Our goal in this chapter is to critically discuss ecosystem configurations and the pivotal dimensions at play in shaping heterogeneous trajectories of diverse places. Sectoral factors, the maturity of entrepreneurial ecosystems and spatial patterns of interactions are shown to affect how ecosystems are configured. The complexity of this phenomenon is enhanced by entrepreneurial agency and the widespread emergence of digital ecosystems. Drawing on these elements, we propose a meta-configurational model of influential dimensions that affect the structure of entrepreneurial ecosystems.
