Chapter 4 in Handbook on the Economics of Renewable Energy, 2023, pp 77-99 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Analysing the factors that determine the development and deployment of renewable energy sources (RES) is a valuable academic effort, since it enables the proposal of strategies based on the drivers that stimulate investment in installed capacity and the elimination of barriers that hinder the diffusion of renewable technologies. Econometric techniques have the benefit that they represent, in an objective and replicable manner, the system of relations that characterizes the development of RES. This technique identifies the main variables that have an impact in this development and allows an analysis of the impact on this system of the relations of various technical, economic, political and social scenarios. This chapter analyses the problems that may be encountered when performing econometric analyses of the drivers and barriers to RES deployment. A review of those studies that use econometric analysis is provided, and main conclusions with respect to the variables included and the econometric technique used are inferred.
