Urban fabric theory: application to waves of innovation

Peter Newman ()

Chapter 4 in Net Zero Cities with Sustainability, 2025, pp 73-94 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Urban fabric theory is explained in terms of urban transport history and is applied to the latest changes under net zero with sustainability, showing different approaches to different parts of cities. Five practice approaches are suggested: relocalized centres with integrated local place infrastructure; net zero corridors and precincts; less car dependence in most urban fabrics; symbiotic partnerships to fund the new urban economy; and rewritten manuals for urban professionals.
