Professional practice: net zero in the maelstrom
Peter Newman ()
Chapter 7 in Net Zero Cities with Sustainability, 2025, pp 134-171 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The analogy of ‘descent into the maelstrom’ from Edgar Allan Poe is applied to the net zero cities with sustainability agenda. Three ‘barrels of change’ are developed: accounting and assessment; integrated planning; and rural and regional strategies for just transition and engagement. Applications in Australia are used to show the benefits and barriers of such leadership approaches for future net zero cities with sustainability.
