Future development: transforming cities and conclusions
Peter Newman ()
Chapter 8 in Net Zero Cities with Sustainability, 2025, pp 172-196 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The future approach to urban development will need to enable projects that are net zero with sustainability outcomes, and increasingly projects that are net positive with regenerative urbanism. This will enable the rapid acceleration to achieve full net zero around 2050 and then a continuing reduction of atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases so that a safe operating space for cities and agriculture of less than 1.5°C above average can be restored. The transformative approaches needed are summarized from across the book and some case studies are outlined. A hopeful approach is possible as much is happening.
