Industry, innovations and transition to the green and circular economy

Massimiliano Mazzanti and Emy Zecca

Chapter 18 in Handbook of Industrial Development, 2023, pp 302-320 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The transition to the Circular Economy system implies technological, organisational, and social innovations adoption and diffusion. These represent key aspects for contributing to the social and economic well-being while avoiding the increase of environmental pressure. This revolution involves different actors at different levels, and its effects vary across countries and regions. In this context an important role is played by firms, they have to adapt their business models to the new paradigm introducing innovating choices able to make this change real. In this context, the knowledge of firms' strategical choices becomes crucial to support them with proper decisions and policy instruments. The aim of this chapter is to investigate the path of eco-innovative schemes of SMEs in a circular context, compering European and Italian firms and trying to highlight possible gaps and elements of novelty.
