Shift-and-share analysis

Miguel A. Márquez

Chapter G.I.2 in Thematic Encyclopedia of Regional Science, 2025, pp 613-614 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of Shift-Share Analysis (SSA), a statistical technique used to decompose regional socio-economic changes into key components: the National Effect, Structural (or Industry Mix) Effect, and Regional (or Competitive) Effect. Tracing its origins to mid-20th-century regional science, the chapter explores the theoretical foundations of SSA and its development into dynamic and spatially explicit extensions of the standard framework. Emphasis is placed on the method's utility for assessing regional performance, identifying competitive advantages, and guiding policy formulation. The chapter highlights SSA's wide-ranging applications, from analyzing employment trends to examining industrial and demographic shifts, and underscores its continued relevance as a practical tool for regional economic analysis.
