Entrepreneurs as new firm founders - the role of the regional environment

Rolf Sternberg

Chapter B.II.2 in Thematic Encyclopedia of Regional Science, 2025, pp 142-143 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This contribution is based on the understanding of entrepreneurship as the creation of new ventures by individuals. Consequently an entrepreneur is a person who has founded a firm in the recent past. the paper argues that the creation process is the result of person-related and of context-related factors, with the latter being mainly connected withe regional envirponment the founders is embedded in. The rather young concept of (regional) entrepreneurial ecosystems (EES) is quite well associated with this perspective on the regional context and has gained in attention among policymakers as well as in acadmia in recent years.
