Abstract: Music is a critical component of genocide that has been actively used by perpetrators of mass atrocities to gain support and encourage their broader actions and policies. Through specific examples drawn from the soundscapes of death and labor camps during the Holocaust and the genocide in Cambodia, this chapter outlines musical tactics of persuasion, indoctrination, and torture. Looking into the role of radio during the genocide in Rwanda, and the boarding schools as spaces of cultural genocide for Indigenous populations in Canada, this chapter questions the accountability of music making and diffusion as an incriminating factor of crimes.
