Populist political communication

Niko Hatakka

Chapter 25 in Research Handbook on Populism, 2024, pp 303-313 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter introduces readers to how researchers have evaluated the role of communication for populism. The introduction discusses how different approaches and definitions of populism shape understandings of populist political communication, and how central communication has been regarded for various political phenomena that pertain to populism. The second section introduces the theoretical and methodological mainstream of populist political communication studies, and overviews its theoretical outlook, most-used methodologies, typologies and core findings. Third, the chapter presents emerging and entirely unexplored avenues for research. The concluding section takes stock to provide an overview of research on populist political communication as a sub-discipline of populism studies in the 2020s.
