Digital populism

Paolo Gerbaudo

Chapter 42 in Research Handbook on Populism, 2024, pp 506-515 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: How does contemporary populism reflect the digital transformation of the public sphere at the time of social media? Building on previous work on this volume, in this chapter I argue that a response to this question can be found by exploring the conduciveness of the digital communication environment to a populist logic. From this standpoint, it is possible to examine how various social tendencies associated with social media such as networked individualism can connect with populist communitarianism. Furthermore, we can better examine how the construction of the other and the construction of popular identity proper to populist politics adapt to the present communication ecosystem. This matching of the structural features of social media communication and populist logic is essential if we are to capture the historically specific form of populism that manifests itself in contemporary society.
