Peronism and its legacy

Abstract: This chapter will address an exemplary case of populism: Peronism. First, we introduce historical Peronism in order to demonstrate that its irruption was an event that reshaped the entire socio-political space in Argentina and to elucidate the persisting traces it inscribed. Second, we explore how the persistence of Peronism is also due to the role of anti-populism. Third, we explore how the legacy of Peronism relies on its ability to make itself available as a surface of inscription of novel political struggles for the extension of rights. Registering the different variations of Peronism throughout its history helps us to understand that it has never been identical to itself, continuously incorporating different demands. Kirchnerism, the last version of Peronism, will be analysed as a suitable example of this process.
