Ownership similarity for target selection
Emanuele L. M. Bettinazzi
Chapter 118 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 317-319 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of ownership similarity in influencing M&A target selection. It highlights how shared ownership types, such as family or private equity, foster cognitive alignment, reduce information asymmetries, and streamline synergy evaluations and negotiations. While challenges like redundancy or rivalries exist, the chapter emphasizes that ownership similarity can enhance the strategic alignment and post-acquisition success of M&A outcomes.
