Purpose-driven M&A
Harin Lee
Chapter 129 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 352-354 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter introduces purpose-driven M&A, highlighting its focus on solving societal challenges while creating long-term, non-financial value. Unlike conventional profit-driven M&A, this approach emphasises shared purpose asa coordination mechanism to align acquiring and target firms. It identifies potential benefits in trust-building and cultural alignment but warns of the risks of conflicting purposes, highlighting the need for strategic balance in leveraging this new business logic.
