Corporate social responsibility (CSR) through M&A

Olimpia Meglio

Chapter 32 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 84-85 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Traditionally M&As are viewed as strategies for maximizing shareholder wealth. However, they are increasingly recognized as powerful means for shaping boundaries far beyond the economic realm. A stakeholder perspective recognizes that acquiring companies need to be responsible towards a range of stakeholders and that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) should be integral to firms’ strategies. Top management is responsible for handling the complex network of stakeholder relationships which shift over time and here a firm's dominant logic and the attention-based view are important influences on what are perceived as strategic issues. In this way CSR coevolves with strategic choices.
