Courtship period
Emanuel Gomes
Chapter 33 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 86-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explains the value of a “courtship period” in mergers and acquisitions, where firms collaborate before a deal to assess strategic, organizational, and cultural fit. Courtship builds trust, reduces information asymmetry, and enables effective negotiations. It fosters post-acquisition success through strengthened relationships and mutual understanding, often improving performance. Collaborative methods such as joint ventures and minority stakes exemplify this exploratory phase.
