Failure – external causes
Duncan N. Angwin
Chapter 59 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 152-154 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter analyses external causes of M&A failure, such as macroeconomicshifts, political interference, regulatory challenges, technological disruptions and competitor responses. It demonstrates how environmental pressures can undermine deal completion, integration and long-term value realisation, calling for greater sensitivity to external contexts in M&A planning and execution.
