Failure – process causes
Duncan N. Angwin
Chapter 61 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 158-159 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores process-related causes of M&A failure, focusing on momentum, reductionism, fragmentation and ambiguity during the acquisition process. It discusses how these factors can lead to overpayment, neglect of strategic considerations and misalignment post-acquisition. The chapter emphasises the need for strategic due diligence, longer time frames and alignment between acquirer and target for reducing process-related risks.
