Industry life cycle and acquisition integration

Chapter 79 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 206-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Value creation in mergers and acquisitions happens during integration, but there is disagreement on the correct strategy to pursue. This is because integration does not occur in isolation but is embedded in a context. The stage of the industry life cycle of an organization plays an important role in determining a beneficial or detrimental effect upon integration. It indicates the volatility and complexity of the task environment, for the way businesses are organized and how employees might experience integration. In the growth stage, informal coordination among acquiring and target employees might be appropriate due to contextual uncertainty. Where there is a more predictable environment in the maturity stage, there might be structural integration for cost reduction and greater efficiency. In the decline stage, clear top-down coordination might be preferred to reduce uncertainty within the organization and to add clarity quickly. Industry context is an important contextual contingency for integration decisions.
