Intellectual property protection

Panos Desyllas

Chapter 91 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 234-236 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines how firms protect and appropriate value from intellectual property (IP) amid open innovation. It highlights challenges in safeguarding IP, the role of organizational boundaries and strategies such as vertical integration, foreign market entry and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). By acquiring complementary assets and overcoming time compression and causal ambiguity, firms can better capture returns, sustain growth and safeguard innovation.
