Longitudinal research in M&A
Melanie E. Hassett
Chapter 99 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Mergers and Acquisitions, 2026, pp 258-260 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter highlights the value of longitudinal research in M&A, emphasising its ability to capture change over time and reveal process dynamics. It contrasts longitudinal approaches with cross-sectional studies, showcasing how the former uncover patterns, causation and iterative development. Despite challenges like access, cost and academic pressures, longitudinal research offers critical insights into post-acquisition integration, explaining synergy realisation and organisational transformation, and advancing theory development in the M&A field.
