Introduction: Rethinking Rural Studies
.
Chapter 1 in Rethinking Rural Studies, 2024, pp 1-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The opening chapter explains the aims of this book, namely, to offer a forward-looking examination of rural studies, to identify emerging issues and research perspectives and to suggest opportunities for rural studies to contribute towards greater wellbeing. The chapter begins by considering what is rural and reviewing the emergence of rural studies and its development as a trans-disciplinary field of inquiry. A number of themes are highlighted, including embeddedness and place; interdependence and a rejection of binary thinking; eclecticism and use of multiple methods. The chapter argues that this is a critical time to rethink rural studies and considers the case for rural studies as public social science - reflexive, value-infused and engaged with diverse publics. Who is rural studies for?
