Wellbeing, governance and rural development: towards an agenda for research and policy
.
Chapter 4 in Rethinking Rural Studies, 2024, pp 53-75 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines wellbeing, governance and rural development. This chapter reviews the emergence of a wellbeing approach to public policy, following the Stiglitz/Sen/Fitoussi report, and suggests a research agenda for rural studies around the concept of collective wellbeing, asking not only whether this constitutes an improvement on GDP as a more appropriate measure of human progress in rural societies, but also exploring several other claims made for the concept of collective wellbeing in relation to rural development, rural governance, and notions of a ‘good countryside’. Could it, for example, provide a framework for more integrated, joined-up governance and for greater civic participation and agency?
