The empirical context: the global apparel value chain

.

Chapter 3 in The Contest for Value in Global Value Chains, 2021, pp 22-32 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Chapter 3 introduces the rationale for the focus on the apparel GVC. As one of the world's foremost GVCs in terms of the globalization and fragmentation of production activities, the apparel industry offers a rich setting for the analysis. It is notable also in its diversity and the heterogeneity of the participants in terms of their market power, skill level and ability to differentiate themselves. These complicate the negotiation for value among participants and offer rich context for observation of the ways by which the consent for value capture among the participants unfolds.
