Towards a balanced distribution of value in global value chains: creating markets for social justice

Abstract: Chapter 8 addresses responses for distortions in value distribution and advance the logic of interdependence relationships as a correction mechanism. Interdependencies among participants inherent in the fragmented and specialized nature of global supply chains give them the power to create markets for social justice, in which social behavior is awarded economically. This mechanism offers a means to incentivize socially-desired behavior that drive outcomes towards balanced distribution of value. Conceptualizing interdependence relationships as a socially-constructed concept that is subject to social legitimation, we outline the contextual boundaries of interdependence dynamics as a force for change. We discuss the cultural, institutional and political conditions necessary to unleash its power as a correction mechanism for distortions in value distribution in global supply chains.
