Poverty in developing Asia and the Asian Development Bank

Mohiuddin Alamgir

Chapter 13 in The Elgar Companion to the Asian Development Bank, 2024, pp 144-156 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter traces poverty in developing Asia since the 1960s. The region became almost free of poverty, as called for by SDG1, before the Covid pandemic. The chapter also discusses the policies and strategies of Asian developing economies and the supporting role the ADB, the World Bank, and other international development institutions played in that process. This dramatic poverty decline is attributed, among others, to growth, better quality jobs, land reform, macro stability, technology, economic liberalization, open trade and expanding global trade volume, investment in education and health, and financial and physical infrastructure. In addition, financial inclusion and the role played by mobile financial services will be highlighted. Finally, these developments will be elaborated beyond the regional profile with individual country cases from India to Thailand, Nepal, east Asia, central Asia, the Pacific, and South Asia.
