Megacities in developing Asia: challenges and opportunities

Syed Abu Hasnath

Chapter 15 in The Elgar Companion to the Asian Development Bank, 2024, pp 167-176 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: During the last four decades, Asian developing economies have experienced remarkable economic growth, accompanied by unprecedented speed and scale of urbanization. This urbanization has resulted in excessive population concentration and agglomeration economies in large metropolitan cities - particularly in megacities - i.e., cities with a population of over ten million. This chapter is concerned with the extent, trend, and pattern of megacity growth, their positive contributions to the development, and their negative contributions in the form of congestion, pollution, and slum-dwelling. It also discusses the scale effect of megacities, including the ever-increasing demand for infrastructure and affordable housing. The chapter concludes with recommendations for the balanced development of cities and towns with size hierarchies.
