Examining the links between homelessness and migration

Juliet Watson, Sarah Taylor and Guy Johnson

Chapter 19 in Research Handbook on Homelessness, 2024, pp 264-278 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines the connections between migration and homelessness. The chapter starts by examining how homelessness and migration are defined, highlighting different ‘types’ of migrant, as well as the impact of different homelessness definitions on the extent of the association between the two. It then examines the challenges researchers might encounter in their effort to better understand migrant homelessness. The chapter goes on to explore geographic patterns of migration and homelessness before turning attention to different policy regimes and how they influence the incidence and nature of the association between homelessness and migration. The chapter concludes with a summary of findings regarding the particular vulnerabilities of migrants to homelessness, drawing attention to the way different vulnerabilities are clustered in particular migrant subgroups.
