Water poverty

Tomson Ogwang and Danny I. Cho

Chapter 23 in Research Handbook on Measuring Poverty and Deprivation, 2023, pp 243-251 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this book chapter, we provide an overview of the concept and measurement of water poverty from both unidimensional and multidimensional perspectives. It turns out that the literature on multidimensional water poverty has largely mimicked that on other multidimensional poverty measures, with very few exceptions. We also review the literature on the correlates of water poverty. Some contentious conceptual and measurement issues relating to water poverty are also pointed out. The potential for constructing a stand-alone multidimensional water poverty index using the water-related dimensions of the Multidimensional Poverty Index is also discussed.
