Robustness methods in the counting approach to multidimensional poverty measurement

Gaston Yalonetzky and Francisco Azpitarte

Chapter 41 in Research Handbook on Measuring Poverty and Deprivation, 2023, pp 439-449 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter reviews the most recent robustness methods for multidimensional poverty comparisons based on binary indicators. The focus of the chapter is on the counting approach to multidimensional poverty measurement whose popularity is partly based on the relative abundance of non-monetary wellbeing data. The chapter reviews partial orderings based on ranking criteria whose fulfilment guarantees the robustness of a poverty comparison to a broad class of alternative measures and related parameter choices. The chapter discusses also the application of sensitivity analysis to gauge the impact on a poverty comparison of changes in narrower sets of measurement choices.
