Abstract:
This chapter aims at presenting the main characteristics and the contribution of the fuzzy set approach to poverty measurement. The idea behind the approach is to use the so-called membership function to respond to the need to consider the imprecision, uncertainty, and vagueness of poverty when measuring it. Firstly, considering poverty measures based on a monetary variable, several membership functions, based on distance or on the distribution function, are presented with their features. Then, considering that the fuzzy sets approach is also a valid instrument to measure multidimensional poverty based on generic deprivation items, the paper presents the peculiarities of the multidimensional measures and the fundamental steps to obtain multidimensional indicators. Particular attention is also paid to the Chakravarty axiomatic approach. Finally, a brief section is dedicated to the fuzzy longitudinal measures of deprivation for analysing persistence and transitions in the state of poverty across time.
