Introduction to A Research Agenda for the Gig Economy and Society

Valerio De Stefano, Ilda Durri, Charalampos Stylogiannis and Mathias Wouters

Chapter 1 in A Research Agenda for the Gig Economy and Society, 2022, pp 1-12 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This book comes at a moment when some "disruptors", more specifically platform businesses, are, indeed, starting to be "disrupted". Such disruption is driven by crucial court decisions and regulatory developments, which attempt to address the ongoing challenges in the so-called "gig economy". For quite some time now, digital labour platforms have avoided labour regulations by hiding under the cloak of technological innovation. The businesses operating these platforms have long alleged that people can work autonomously, as self-employed persons, and "be their own bosses" away from any supervision or control thanks to their technologies.
