Platform work and precariousness: Low earnings and limited control of work

Iain Campbell

Chapter 7 in A Research Agenda for the Gig Economy and Society, 2022, pp 113-132 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter reviews recent research on labour platforms and precariousness (or precarity), focusing on two key dimensions of precarious work: a) low earnings; and b) limited worker control over aspects such as working-time schedules. Both earnings and control of work figure prominently in conventional schemas for assessing precariousness in jobs, but both are significant for employment research because they invite a broader perspective that would incorporate worker experiences, as shaped by social location as well as objective job characteristics. The chapter highlights the achievements of platform work research in describing diverse experiences of low earnings and limited control, but it proposes three areas for further research.
