Feminist theory in international political economy

Corinna Dengler and Hanna Völkle

Chapter 12 in A Research Agenda for International Political Economy, 2022, pp 201-213 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The chapter focuses on the linkages of IPE and gender, discusses recurring feminist themes in IPE, and outlines a future research agenda at the intersection of feminist and ecological concerns. Starting from the assumption that including gender as a single variable in IPE analyses is not enough, the chapter discusses the three themes of (1) care, (2) climate, and (3) money to illustrate that intersectional gender relations need to be integrally considered in every IPE analysis in order not to unintentionally reproduce them. The chapter discusses those themes against the background of the question: To what extent is a feminist IPE able to provide useful elements to explain multidimensional, intertwisted, and dynamical current crises? In perceiving society and economy as embedded and embodied, the authors sketch out a future research agenda that from a feminist-ecological IPE perspective seeks transformative solutions to the multidimensional crises.
