Chapter 13 in Field Guide to Family Business Research, 2023, pp 173-187 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The non-economic utility that family business owners derive from their business was labeled as Socioemotional Wealth (SEW) by G—mez-Mej'a et al. (2007). The SEW approach has emerged as a research stream that explains the uniqueness of family owners' preferences and strategic decision-making. Despite its popularity, many have questioned its general applicability as a central homegrown theory of family business. We expand the debate on how to enhance the validity of the SEW approach by suggesting effective methods to introduce context in SEW research and exploring the different strategies to conduct context-sensitive SEW research. Our study suggests that alongside a clear definition and validation of SEW, contextualizing it is equally vital to understand the limits of the SEW approach and enhance the generalizability of SEW studies.
