Planning your contribution and paths to publication in family business research

Evelyn Micelotta

Chapter 2 in Field Guide to Family Business Research, 2023, pp 7-19 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter offers a practical guide to better understand how different types of family business papers can make a theoretical contribution to management research. I introduce a 2x2 framework based on two dimensions: Contextual Orientation and Target Audience. The matrix identifies four types of empirical family business papers, which vary in their contribution to knowledge: (1) Embedded, (2) Challenger, (3) Integrative, and (4) Generalized. I discuss each type and provide an empirical illustration of a published paper, focusing on the way authors of these manuscripts make a contribution to their target audience. Understanding what ‘theoretical contribution’ means for different audiences can help family business scholars craft their research in a way that both addresses their research questions and meets the expectations of editors and reviewers.
