Chapter 3 in Field Guide to Family Business Research, 2023, pp 20-32 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The three-circles approach to understanding the unique challenges posed by the study of family businesses and business families has reached paradigm consensus (Moores, 2009). Even so, the richness of this seminal framework is in danger of being overlooked as the field has evolved and matured in recent decades. In this chapter, we revisit this foundational approach and draw stakeholders’ (i.e., researchers, advisors, and current and future generations of family business managers) attention to ways that a deeper appreciation of differences within, between, and among the circles is beneficial.
