Economical sports economics classroom activities

Chapter 17 in Teaching Sports Economics and Using Sports to Teach Economics, 2022, pp 241-251 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This paper describes three classroom activities that can be used in sports economics classes. One is the "bidding for a $5 bill" game that leads to a runaway bidding process that can be likened to the college sports arms race. The second game is a bidding game for a bag of change that can be used to illustrate the "winner's curse." The third game involves flipping coins and examining streaks of head or tails that occur naturally but appear to be the result of a "hot-hand".
