Chapter 5 in Teaching Sports Economics and Using Sports to Teach Economics, 2022, pp 79-92 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Faculty frequently supervise undergraduate and graduate research projects related to sports economics as part of courses, capstone projects, honors theses, and in other settings. Outstanding, publishable research sometimes comes from these projects, but less-than-satisfactory outcomes often occur. This chapter describes a structured approach to supervising research projects in sports economics that emphasizes reproducibility of the empirical results in the final deliverable. This approach, which should ideally be implemented on day one of any supervised research, includes comprehensive instructions on folder and file naming, data cleaning and processing, data documentation, coding, and data analysis. Scripting all steps in the process, thus creating documentation of every step involved in completing an empirical research project, represents a key feature of this process. Understanding the process of writing instead of focusing on final drafts is also a key part of this approach.
