Sports and the law: using court cases to teach sports economics
Victor Matheson
Chapter 7 in Teaching Sports Economics and Using Sports to Teach Economics, 2022, pp 103-127 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Legal rulings, such as the one granting baseball an exemption to antitrust laws, have had a significant impact on the development of professional sports in the US, and these rulings often show how economics is used (or sometimes not used) in the creation of public policy. Delving into the original text of opinions in major court cases can also sharpen students' critical reading skills, and they also provide a source of supplemental readings that do not require students to have background in statistics or quantitative analysis. This chapter also includes an appendix of court cases that may be of interest to teachers of sports-related courses.
